What is the UCA Winter Upgrading Programme?

The University of Central Asia's (UCA) Winter Upgrading Programme offers intensive upgrading courses in English and mathematics for Grade 11 students in Central Asia who plan to apply to universities with English-language instruction and require English and mathematics entrance exam(s). The programme also helps students prepare for UCA's admission test and for success in the University's first-year Preparatory Programme.

When and where does it take place?

The four-day intensive programme is offered during winter break at the UCA Naryn Campus. Students receive 16 hours of English and Mathematics instruction. This is a unique opportunity to learn from UCA’s highly qualified faculty experience a world class campus and education from highly qualified faculty. Students will be accommodated at the University’s state of the art residences and provided with three meals a day and tea breaks. Transportation from designated pick up locations to and from the Naryn campus is provided by UCA.

Programme Locations and Dates

The Winter Upgrading Programme is held at the UCA Naryn Campus. The programme will be held on January 3rd to January 6th and again from January 7th to January 10th.

Programme dates for students from Kazakhstan: January 3-6, 2017*

* Please note: Students will depart to Naryn on 2 January and return to their designated pick-up location on 7 January via UCA-arranged transport.

** Please note: Students will depart to Naryn on 6 January and return to their designated pick-up location on 10 and 11 January. Students from Naryn, Balykchy and Karakol will depart on 10 January after classes. Students from Talas will depart on 11 January at 5am. If you require a letter of exemption from classes, UCA can provide a letter of participation in the programme.

What do you learn?

The curriculum focuses on building skills in English and mathematics that are not adequately covered in regional curricula and are typically required by international English-medium universities. Students will be exposed to UCA's student-centred style of teaching, which has an applied learning approach. Pre-assessment and post-assessment tests will be conducted to measure the effectiveness of the programme.

English-language Skills
Through a balance of instruction and activities in reading, listening, speaking, and writing in English, students will develop their comprehension, critical thinking, analysis and problem solving skills in the English language. The upgrading will focus on developing specific skills such as writing structured paragraphs, analysing and responding to texts critically, problem solving and constructing and presenting arguments in a clear and logical way.

Mathematics Skills
Each session will focus on a fundamental mathematical concept, including review, guided-practice, independent practice and group activities. Topics include coordinate geometry, the interpretation of graphs, solving word problems and sequences and series. Students will participate in group activities and apply concepts to real world problems, further developing their critical thinking and problem solving skills. When necessary, support to enhance mathematical understanding in English will be provided.

How much does the programme cost?

The Winter Upgrading Programme fee is a standard rate that can be paid in any of the following national currencies:

  • Tajikistan: 180 TJS
  • Kyrgyz Republic: 1,600 KGS
  • Kazakhstan: 7,700 KZT

Successful applicants will submit the programme fee on the first day of the programme. Please note that at this time fees can only be accepted in cash.

The Programme welcomes applications from Grade 11 high school students.

What are the selection criteria?

Selection is strictly merit-based and determined through an overall assessment of high school performance in English and mathematics through a review of student grades, as well as on a statement of purpose describing personal motivations and aptitude.

When and how are selected students notified?

Final acceptance decisions are communicated to all applicants via email by 22 December 2016. Successful candidates must notify the selection committee of their desire to attend by 25 December 2016.
